How wine-specialist Goedhuis & Co avoids
business bottlenecks

Share

Vision and purpose

Excellence and innovation

Wine lover and connoisseur, Johnny Goedhuis, founded Goedhuis & Co over thirty years ago. It is now one of the UK’s leading fine wine merchants. Goedhuis & Co is run with passion by a team of specialist wine lovers that have built a reputation for discovering and promoting unheralded producers, alongside wines from the most famous vineyards. This expertise ensures that Goedhuis & Co’s international client base has access to the finest wines from the very best vintages.

The business challenge

Errors inherent in paperwork had to be addressed for ease of operation and, more importantly, to improve customer service

New markets, established standards

Success has led to expansion in the Far East. Working at a larger scale created some challenges that made it harder to operate with flexibility and maintain the high standards Goedhuis had established.

Bringing logic to logistics

The operation is heavily dependent on external communication networks; a burgeoning admin hub and complex logistics. The core business challenge was to join up these pivotal systems and improve automation across all processes from sales to delivery. Errors inherent in paperwork and anomalies of handling decisions had to be addressed for ease of operation and, more importantly, to improve customer service.

Planning an upgrade

Goedhuis decided to upgrade its IT infrastructure and, specifically, to invest in the development of a new, more sophisticated enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.

Value delivered

A deep understanding

The ERP system is the lifeblood of Goedhuis’ communications, marketing and trading activities. It is mission-critical to the efficiency and success of business operations. There was never any doubt that the Microsoft Navision version 3 system was obsolete, but selecting, implementing and integrating a next-generation system required deep understanding of the company’s operations and its strategy for growth.

Future-proofing

As new mobile technology and products come on line, the capability of the Citrix XenApp 6.5 server to accommodate effective remote access for sales staff. This future-proofs the business and handles staffing fluctuations – an especially useful feature given that sizable seasonal trading fluctuations are inherent in the wine market.

Operational efficiency

“The robust, reliable and automated two-way communications and file sharing capability we now have with the warehouse (not part of the Goedhuis estate) is of paramount importance. In itself it has already proved to be the fastest and most tangible benefit to our operational efficiency – a calculable ROI”, says Peter Dunmow, Associate Director of IT for Goedhuis & Co.

The solution

Focus on ROI

Goedhuis & Co. turned to Network Interlinks with a challenging brief; create a customised solution to unblock the business potential of its communications and storage systems and lay the foundations for a ‘future proof’ network to maximise the return on investment (ROI) of the upgrade.

Experience

A series of meetings and consultations started promptly – and concepts were drawn up to promote an innovative solution. Having implemented and remotely managed the company’s existing infrastructure over many years, Network Interlinks was in a unique position to evolve the system.

Broad analysis

After a full analysis of a range of options, it was decided to retain an on-premise solution utilising virtualisation where possible. In order to control costs the stand-alone versions of VMware’s ESXi were used. These host servers support the client’s core server infrastructure, covering email, DC, Microsoft NAV and Citrix XenApp, together with their file system.

The best of both worlds

In order to provide both off-site back up and the ability to recover systems in the case of a disaster DoubleTake has been employed to provide both local and off-site replication of applications, data and servers. A dedicated local server gathers and stores continuous replicas of the production servers, with their applications and data. The local server is then replicated to an off-site server hosted by Rise. This server is also running DoubleTake, either server can be used to rapidly recover individual files through to full server images.

Built-in flexibility

Through the consultative process the architecture of this design has built-in flexibility to add additional solutions and services either on-premise or in the Cloud as the company continues to grow.

Partner of choice

“There’s little doubt that Network Interlinks was, and will continue to be the IT partner of choice for Goedhuis as we move forward together to tackle the next, unforeseen bottleneck. Having worked with Network Interlinks for some 13 years, we had faith that the team understands our business. The established relationship means that Network Interlinks continues to have a real grasp on our operations; our need for stability and our business strategy for growth”, reflects Dunmow.

Cybercrime continues to be an issue for small & midsize businesses.

ransomware image Yesterday the BBC reported that more than 50% of UK businesses have suffered ransomware attacks in the last year. This is the greatest single risk to IT networks and business performance. We have helped a number of companies, in the past few weeks, recover from recent attacks. However, the cost in terms of lost time and sales revenue has in some cases been significant. We believe prevention is better than cure and have outlined the issue and methods to avoid the angst and potential loss of sales revenue below:

How does it work?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to block access to business data by encrypting and renaming files. The bug usually travels into the IT network through email or downloadable internet files, programmes or applications. A demand for a sum of money is made and usually payable in bitcoins. These are untraceable so the perpetrator escapes with the cash – usually in the region of £2,500. Decrypting files without the decryption key is complex and time consuming. As a result organisations and businesses must weigh up whether they wish to part with the ransom or lose time, precious data and incur costs for IT consultants to solve the issue.

How do I prevent it?

Enforce good security practices within the businesses IT networks by employing effective anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spam products to improve the chance of detection before infection. This includes educating the workforce to the dangers of downloading information from an unknown source. Talk to our consultants who will assist your company to write and communicate effective online security policies that will protect your business.

How does my business recover without paying the ransom?

Efficient back-up is the answer. Network Interlinks works quickly and painlessly to rebuild computer systems and applications to an acceptable recent state from the businesses Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity solution. This out smart’s the criminal hacker and puts the company back in business promptly.
