How Jackson Lifts takes customer service to a higher level

Share

Vision and purpose

Customer focus

Jackson Lift Group, a family run business established in 1979, is the UK’s largest independent lift, escalator and cradle maintenance company. Its success has been achieved by proactively putting customer service at the core of everything it does. Jackson Lifts had identified maximising uptime as a business objective that was critically important in ensuring it could meet its customer-focused performance levels. It wanted to safeguard key systems and applications and ensure they would be available in less than four hours following any outage.

The business challenge

Because much of its workforce operates remotely, even short outages can be expensive

Putting remote-working to work

Jackson Lifts IT systems are based on a Microsoft platform supporting Microsoft Nav running on an SQL database. These lie at the heart of the company and enable remote engineers to view customer details and log support calls, as well as providing access to maintenance records and invoicing. Because much of its workforce operates remotely, even short outages can be expensive and frustrating for clients and staff alike.

Value delivered

Ready for anything

The disaster recovery and business continuity solution Network Interlinks designed gives longevity as it is scalable to meet the future needs of the business. The automated design has been created to ensure that in the event of a disaster, however large or small, business-critical systems are never more than 15 minutes out of date. The remaining systems are backed up every three hours.

Reducing costs

Using virtualisation at the disaster recovery site allows for a minimum server requirement, reducing costs, rack footprint and power requirements in the data centre. Beyond this, a pay-as–you-go model has reduced capital expenditure and removed the need for software licence upgrades.

Confidence

“This proven solution has performed exceptionally well under test conditions — just as we expected it to”, says Paul Ringer, IT Manager. “The disaster recovery project gives us a great deal of confidence in Network Interlinks as a very competent partner.”

The solution

Resilient, flexible, cost effective

Citrix XenApp was utilised to provide a resilient, flexible and cost effective solution. This delivers the core applications to remote and office based personnel and is replicated at the Disaster Recovery site.

Ready for business growth

Wyse Winterms are used for desktop delivery, reducing the cost of IT provisioning and simplifying the desktop. This solution is silent and energy efficient, using less power than a conventional PC. The Core Netapp filers have been installed to add capacity for additional services that business growth will drive.

No management fees

NetApp storage provides the core data solution for Navision, Exchange, file storage and the storage and management of the Citrix XenServer virtual server platform. Two FA-2020 filers have been installed to keep data secure on-sight. This has the added benefit of cost savings; there are no monthly or annual management fees due to a third party.

Frequent back-ups, swift recovery

The primary filer offers centralised fast storage, with snapshotting, enabling frequent and local backups of data to be taken of the ERP system every 15 minutes 24×7. The data from the snapshots are continuously replicated to the remote site, where they can be made available within hours of losing the primary site.

Key benefits

  • Solid business continuity and disaster recovery plan
  • Solution design to meet future needs of the business
  • Pay as you Go monthly subscription fee

Technical summary

Cybercrime continues to be an issue for small & midsize businesses.

ransomware image Yesterday the BBC reported that more than 50% of UK businesses have suffered ransomware attacks in the last year. This is the greatest single risk to IT networks and business performance. We have helped a number of companies, in the past few weeks, recover from recent attacks. However, the cost in terms of lost time and sales revenue has in some cases been significant. We believe prevention is better than cure and have outlined the issue and methods to avoid the angst and potential loss of sales revenue below:

How does it work?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to block access to business data by encrypting and renaming files. The bug usually travels into the IT network through email or downloadable internet files, programmes or applications. A demand for a sum of money is made and usually payable in bitcoins. These are untraceable so the perpetrator escapes with the cash – usually in the region of £2,500. Decrypting files without the decryption key is complex and time consuming. As a result organisations and businesses must weigh up whether they wish to part with the ransom or lose time, precious data and incur costs for IT consultants to solve the issue.

How do I prevent it?

Enforce good security practices within the businesses IT networks by employing effective anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spam products to improve the chance of detection before infection. This includes educating the workforce to the dangers of downloading information from an unknown source. Talk to our consultants who will assist your company to write and communicate effective online security policies that will protect your business.

How does my business recover without paying the ransom?

Efficient back-up is the answer. Network Interlinks works quickly and painlessly to rebuild computer systems and applications to an acceptable recent state from the businesses Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity solution. This out smart’s the criminal hacker and puts the company back in business promptly.
